The Pierre Auger Observatory invites you to participate in a drawing and painting contest.
"Even today, in the 21st century, women and girls are being sidelined in science-related fields due to their gender. Women need to know that they have a place in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and that they have a right to share in scientific progress."
Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General
In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly established February 11th as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The sponsorship of more than 65 countries and the approval of all Member States to the resolution signals the global community’s interest in transforming our world through achieving gender parity in educational opportunity and scientific participation and preparation.
Women are pursuing careers in science at higher rates than ever before, a very positive result for the growing representation of female voices. However, the percentage of women scientists has stalled in the last years and is in no way guaranteed that it will not start decreasing. Particularly in physics and astrophysics this percentage hovers almost unchanged in the last two decades somewhere between 20% and 30% in most regions in the world, with some small geographical variations.
With marking the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Auger Collaboration wants to raise more awareness and to support a change in culture which will benefit everyone.
