NSF Announces Funding for Auger Project

On September 1 the National Science Foundation notified Dr. Fred Bernthal of the Universities Research Association that the first NSF funding for the U.S. contribution to the Pierre Auger Project has been awarded. We wish to thank the NSF program officer for the Auger Project, Dr. Marvin Goldberg, for his leadership in securing this award. We would also like to thank Dr. Morris L. Aizenman, Executive Officer of the NSF Division of Astronomical Sciences, and Dr. Henry N. Blount, Head of the Office of Multidisciplinary Activities, for partial support of this award from their respective offices.

The U.S. contribution to the funding for the construction of the Auger Observatory Site in Argentina is being provided equally by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. Department of Energy funds for the Auger Project were awarded earlier this year.
